I babysat for a family of four children once in the 90s who named all of their children starting with the letter D. These children were named Destiny, Diamond, Dusty and Dinky.

Dinky was a boy too. Can you imagine that name on a grown man?

When I was young I wanted to have a boy and a girl and I planned to name them Dallas and Odessa. Then for a little while I thought Arista (like the record label) would be really cool name for a baby girl.

I’ve always appreciated names that buck the system. I can’t imagine following the popular baby name trends and or choosing something really common like Heather or Ann or Robert or Bill.

One practice that leads to some odd baby names has grown in the last decade or so and that is taking common names and spelling them phonically. Stephanie becomes Stefanny.

When I asked a friend who planned named her son Sighman why she would want to take such a simple name as Simon and ruin it, she replied that she just wanted to do something unusual. I told her that if she followed through with it, that I would have to name my first son Airwreck.

THE buy-to-let market remains subdued but is showing gradual signs of recovery, according to figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

There were 24,900 buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages taken out in the second quarter of 2010, 13 per cent more than in quarter one and 15 per cent higher than in the second quarter of last year.

CML director general Michael Coogan commented: “The buy-to-let market has continued to grow, albeit slowly, throughout the period since the credit crunch.

“And with fewer people able to afford the entry costs to home- ownership, as well as the pressure on social housing, tenant demand for private rented property will remain strong.

“Funding conditions for lenders remain tight, but there is every reason to expect the buy-to-let sector to continue to make a powerful contribution to helping meet the country’s varied housing needs.”

Many times we would vote unanimously for one of the great mom and pop places that had become a great diversion from typical lunch menus, unfortunately most of the time someone in the group would say I can?t go there because all I have is a card, and they don?t accept them. There were 10 to 12 people all ready and willing to spend money at your place but you ran the numbers and decided you did not need credit card revenue.

I have no anger on this subject, only observations. My observation is the gay fringe males which are 18 to lets say 30 or so, go to extreme lengths to threaten, slander and even break laws to be heard. That hurts the gay movement for marriage. And after listening to all this denial of the problems this fringe group is doing from those who are in the main group it is obvious they too condone it. Since they condone it, we must not allow gay marriage as it is rewarding rioters, law-breakers and those who threaten.
